Neighborhood profile: Deanwood

Located near the eastern corner of DC, Deanwood is a mix of town homes, duplexes, Victorians and cottages, with a long history as one of the city's first predominantly African-American neighborhoods. Deanwood boasts a dense tree cover that helps to foster a "small town" neighborhood feel, where people know their neighbors. Once the home of DC's first-and-only amusement park, Suburban Gardens, Deanwood is now host to Marvin Gaye Park, as well as the Deanwood Recreation Center.

The Deanwood neighborhood is a microcosm of DC itself: longtime residents living next to newcomers to the city. Old homes- some designed by well-known DC architect and Deanwood resident Lewis Giles, Sr.- next to new developments. With a metro station nearby (the Deanwood stop on Metro's Orange Line) and easy access to 295, Deanwood is a quick trip from all of the hustle and bustle of downtown DC, but maintains a sense of tranquility in its tree-lined streets. Most recently, the District began restoration work on the historic Strand Theater, investing $1 million in renovating and restoring the building with the long-term goal of using it to provide 9,000 square feet of retail, a small business incubator and affordable housing.

With it's tree-lined streets and open yards, small town feel and new retail development- and recently named to the Washington Post's "Hot List", Deanwood is an attractive option for first-time homebuyers and longtime residents alike.
