Neighborhood profile: Fairlawn
One of the first communities developed east of the Anacostia River, the Fairlawn neighborhood is a small enclave of approximately 6,000 residents. Fairlawn is bordered by the Anacostia River to the northwest, Pennsylvania Ave to the northeast, Minnesota Ave to the east and Good Hope Road to the southwest, the neighborhood has easy access to the heart of DC via I-295 and 695.
Up until the 1920s, much of what would become the neighborhood remained wooded or part of larger estates. With the development of the Washington Navy Yard across the river, Fairlawn become a residential suburb of sorts, with row homes, detached homes, condominiums and rental properties taking over the landscape.
The Anacostia River park is accessible from the neighborhood via footbridge; the 1,200-acre park provides outstanding views of the DC skyline, plenty of space to run and play and a perfect spot to watch the sun set. Retail and restaurant space directly in the neighborhood is currently limited, but easy access to Barracks Row, Capitol Hill or downtown DC means all of the city's many restaurants, entertainment and activities are only a short drive or metro ride away. And with the planned development of the 11th Street Bridge Park, more options for outdoor, arts and education space will soon be available.
