Preparing your home for winter

Winter presents a myriad of dangers to your home: flooding, power outages, heat loss, frozen pipes, etc. While you can’t prevent every threat, you can be prepared for whatever comes your way.

Here’s a checklist of ways to winterize your home for the coming cold and wet, with special thanks to The Washington Post:

  1. Check your home’s heating and air conditioning system

  2. Paint, caulk, and seal exterior wood

  3. Seal your masonry and hard surfaces

  4. Check your drainage

  5. Clean your gutters

  6. Test your sump pump

  7. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  8. Shut down the pool and the sprinkler system and drain drain outside faucets

  9. Prepare your lawn and yard equipment

  10. Check your trees

  11. Mulch your leaves instead of raking

  12. Make sure your attic doesn’t become a critter hotel

  13. Do a quick energy audit

  14. Cover your patio furniture

  15. Prepare for snow removal and restock your de-icing supplies

  16. Prepare for power outages
